Solar Panels in Perth, Designed for How WA’s Grid Works

Perth is the sunniest capital city, but the grid is the hard part: WA’s own network, a time-based buyback and new Western Power rules from 1 May 2026.

Perth averages about 8.8 hours of sunshine a day, around 3,200 hours a year, which makes it the sunniest of Australia's capital cities according to Bureau of Meteorology long-term averages. Sun is not the hard part here.

What makes solar panels in Perth different is the grid. WA runs its own network, Synergy buys back exports under a time-based scheme, and Western Power changed its connection rules for new and upgraded systems on 1 May 2026. A system designed for the east coast can underperform here.

How WA Pays for Your Exported Solar

3pm to 9pm
10cper kWh
All other times
2cper kWh

Perth homes on the main grid (the South West Interconnected System) sell exports to Synergy under the government-set Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS). Unlike the east coast, you cannot shop around for a better feed-in offer.

Time of exportDEBS rate for Synergy customers
3pm to 9pm10 cents per kWh
All other times2 cents per kWh
Perth solar export rates: 10 cents from 3pm to 9pm, 2 cents at other times

Rates as published by Energy Policy WA. Check Synergy for any update before relying on them.

Most solar is generated before 3pm, when exports earn very little. That shapes three design choices we make for every Perth home:

  1. Use more of your own solar.Every kilowatt-hour you use instead of exporting at 2 cents saves you buying it back at the full retail rate.
  2. Consider west-facing panels.Panels facing west produce more in the late afternoon, when the peak export rate applies and when many homes start cooking and cooling.
  3. Time battery discharge.A battery that covers your evening load, or exports in the 3pm to 9pm window, gets far more value from stored midday solar.

Our guides to home solar panels and solar batteries explain these options in more detail.

Western Power's 2026 Connection Rules

New requirements start
1 May 2026
Export limit without remote management
1.5kW

From 1 May 2026, new requirements apply to new and upgraded rooftop solar and battery systems connecting to Western Power's network. The WA Government says the changes allow bigger systems and more exports where network capacity allows.

They build on emergency solar management, in place since 2022, which lets the system be turned down remotely in rare grid emergencies. Systems that cannot meet the remote management requirement face a 1.5 kW export limit.

In practice, this means your installer must:

  • Choose an inverter and battery that meet Western Power's current technical requirements
  • Confirm you have a working internet connection for remote management
  • Set the system up with Synergy's management platform at commissioning

We handle this as part of every solar panel installation in Perth, and we explain it to you before you sign. More detail is on the Energy Policy WA consumer page.

Solar Battery Perth Homeowners Can Claim Extra Support For

WA adds its own battery rebate on top of the federal discount, and it is one of the more generous in the country.

IncentiveSynergy customers (Perth)
WA Residential Battery Scheme rebate$130 per usable kWh, up to $1,300
Federal Cheaper Home Batteries ProgramAround 30% off, tiered by capacity; next step-down 1 January 2027
WA no-interest loanUp to $10,000 for eligible households

To receive the WA rebate, the battery must be enrolled in an approved virtual power plant, chosen from the supported equipment list, and installed by an accredited installer. More than 11,500 batteries had been installed under the WA scheme by February 2026, according to Energy Policy WA.

Our solar battery rebate guide shows how the federal and WA amounts are worked out. Read the VPP terms before you sign: how often your battery can be used, what reserve you keep for your own home and how you can leave.

Perth Conditions We Design For

  • Heat.February averages above 31°C. Panels lose some output as they heat up, and batteries last longer out of direct afternoon sun. We mount inverters and batteries in shaded, ventilated spots.
  • Coastal exposure.Homes near the coast need mounting hardware and enclosures suited to salt air.
  • Winter output.Perth's wet season runs roughly May to September, and short cloudy days reduce production. We size batteries on year-round usage, not just a summer day.
  • Air conditioning.Late-afternoon cooling load in summer lines up with the DEBS peak window, which strengthens the case for west-facing panels and storage.

Planning an electric car? A home EV charger can use midday solar that would otherwise export at 2 cents.

Why Choose Local Solar Installers in Perth, WA

Perth has its own grid, its own export scheme and its own connection rules. An installer who works here every week will know Western Power's requirements, Synergy's processes and how Perth homes actually use power.

That local knowledge is what turns solar panels in Perth from a good idea into a good result. Every Perth design we prepare includes:

  • A shading and orientation check that weighs west-facing panels against the 3pm to 9pm DEBS window
  • Confirmation that your inverter and battery meet Western Power's current requirements
  • The WA battery rebate and the federal discount shown as separate lines
  • The VPP terms explained in plain English before you enrol
  • A written list of the circuits any battery will back up
07 · Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Solar Panels in Perth Still Worth It With a 2 Cent Feed-In Rate?

The value has moved from exporting to using your own solar. For most Perth homes, solar still cuts the amount of grid power you buy, especially with panels facing west or a battery for the evening.

Do I Have to Join a VPP to Get a Battery Rebate in Perth?

For the WA rebate, yes. For the federal discount, the battery must be VPP-capable but joining is optional.

Can I Choose a Different Electricity Retailer for Better Feed-In?

Not on Perth's main grid as a household. Synergy is the residential retailer, and DEBS rates are set by the government.

Which Direction Should Solar Panels Face in Perth?

North gives the most total energy. West adds value in the late afternoon, when the peak export rate applies. Many Perth homes benefit from a mix.

Do the 2026 Rules Affect My Existing System?

They apply to new and upgraded systems. Adding a battery or replacing your inverter counts as an upgrade, so your installer must meet the current requirements.
